We had to look around for awhile to find the right images to pair on the front and back covers of this issue. We knew we were in love with the Coleman shot since it was modern but felt timeless (or at least like an image from surfing’s classical period). The intensity of a set unloading at Pipeline in Shane Grace’s photo—rendered in hi-res and full-tropical color—was kind of the counterpoint we needed to offset the gauzy, California-centric nostalgia of Coleman’s image.
